A new sample of giant radio galaxies from the WENSS survey

چکیده

We have used the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS) to define a sample of 47 low redshift (z <∼ 0.4) giant radio galaxies. This is the largest sample yet of such radio sources originating from a single survey. We present radio maps of the newly discovered giants and optical images and spectra of their host galaxies. We present some of their properties and discuss the selection effects. We investigate the distribution of the sources in the radio power – linear size (P −D) diagram, and how these parameters relate to the redshifts of the sources in our sample. We find a strong drop in the number of sources with a linear size above 2 Mpc. We argue that this is not a result of selection effects, but that it indicates either a strong luminosity evolution of radio sources of such a size, or that a large fraction of radio sources ‘switch off’ before they are able to grow to a size of 2 Mpc.

Spectral-ageing Analysis of Selected Distant Giant Radio Galaxies

Very deep 4.9GHz observations with the VLA are used to supplement available radio maps at the frequencies of 325MHz (WENSS survey) and 1.4GHz (NVSS survey) in order to study the synchrotron spectra and radiative ages of relativistic particles in the extended lobes of distant giant radio galaxies selected from the sample of Machalski et al. (2001).

A new sample of giant radio galaxies from the WENSS survey II - A multi - frequency

We have formed a complete sample of 26 low redshift (z < ∼ 0.3) giant radio galaxies (GRGs) from the WENSS survey, selected at flux densities above 1 Jy at 325 MHz. We present 10.5-GHz observations with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope of 18 sources in this sample. These observations, together with similar data of the remaining eight sources, are combined with data from the WENSS, NVSS and GB6 su...

A Sample of 669 Ultra Steep Spectrum Radio Sources to Find High Redshift Radio Galaxies ⋆

Since radio sources with Ultra Steep Spectra (USS; α ∼ < −1.30;S ∝ ν) are efficient tracers of high redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs), we have defined three samples of such USS sources using the recently completed WENSS, TEXAS, MRC, NVSS and PMN radiosurveys. Our combined sample contains 669 sources with S1400 > 10 mJy and covers virtually the entire sky outside the Galactic plane (|b| > 15). For...

Radio Halo and Relic Candidates from the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey

We have undertaken a systematic search for diffuse radio halos and relics in all of the Abell clusters that are visible in the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS). In this survey we found 18 candidates, 11 of which are already known from the literature, and 7 for which we provide the first evidence of diffuse radio emission. All the clusters in this sample show other evidence for a recent or...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
